Israel to Defend Those Accused of War Crimes

Posted by clare3

Special legal teams will defend Israeli soldiers against potential war crimes charges stemming from civilian deaths in the gaza Strip. The Prime Minister said Sunday he was promising the country would fully back those who fought in the three-week offensive.

This move reflected growing concerns by Israel that officers could be subject to international prosecution. This despite the army's claims that Hamas militants caused the civilian casualties by staging attacks from residential areas. Hamas official, Ayman Taha, at talks Sunday in Cairo, aimed at solidifying the truce, said the Islamic group offered a one-year truce to Israel. This included the reopening of border crossings to allow vital supplies into gaza. He said Israel offered an 18 month truce, which Hamas rejected. Israeli officials refused to comment on this.

Italy's Premier Criticized Over Rape Comments

Posted by clare3

Premier Silvio Berlusconi is being criticized for suggesting that Italy's women are so beautiful they need military escorts to avoid rape. I'm sure they have lots of beautiful women in Italy, but I serious don't believe escorts are necessary. They don't have them in America and we have plenty of beautiful women here, as well.

The Premier made the comments on Sunday. He was responding to questions about a proposal to deploy 300,000 soldiers in the streets to fight crime. That wouldn't hurt anything. They probably need them for that reason. There have been a series of violent crimes, including a rape in Rome on New Year's Eve and another outside the capital this week. This promoted the proposal of troops.

He also said that even with added police, such crimes can happen, and that "We would need so many soldiers because our women are so beautiful." Although opposition lawmaker, Giovanna Melandri said Berlusconi's comments were "profoundly offensive," Berlusconi says he was complimenting women. That seems a little unbalanced - 2 rapes and 300,000 soldiers needed to fight crime????

Los Angeles Sets January Record for Heat

Posted by clare3

Winter in Los Angeles has felt a bit like summer of late. The National Weather Service said Monday was the city's 9th straight day with temperatures in the 80's. This was a record for January. Meteorologist, Jamie Meier, says a high of 82 degrees was recorded at a University of Southern California weather station near downtown. Forecasters expect temperatures in the 70's and a Pacific storm was forecast to bring rain last Wednesday.

When we lived there in the 60's it was 90 degrees one New Year's Day. Our daughter was out in a beach chair on the lawn in her bikini getting a sun tan. We called back home to Iowa to gloat as they were freezing and the usual New Years snowstorm was going on. That was too warm.

First Stem Cell Study for Spinal Injury Approved

Posted by clare3

A United States biotech company says it plans to start this summer on the world's first study of treatment based on human embryonic stem cells. This has been a long awaited project aimed at spinal cord injury. They say they have tried this on many animals without much success but they aren't giving up and will be anxious to be able to try it on humans.

The company gained federal permission this week to inject eight to ten patients with cells derived from embryonic cells. This was according to Dr. Thomas Okarma, president and CEO of Geron Corp. of Menlo Park, California. The patients will be paraplegics, who can use their arms but can't walk. This will mean raising and killing embryos to get the stem cells. I do not agree with this as I feel it is murder. But not everyone agrees. There are a number of other ways to get stem cells for the same experiments, including taking them right from your own body such as your arm, or from the umbilical cord of new babies.

Russia and Ukraine Sign Natural Gas Deal

Posted by clare3

Pledging to restore natural gas supplies to Europe, Russia and Ukraine signed deals to end a bitter dispute that led to a chilling two-week cutoff of shipments. Europeans, who normally get about one-fifth of their gas from Russia by way of the Ukrainian pipelines, anxiously awaited for the fuel to start flowing.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Yulia Tyoshenko signed the documents at Putin's government headquarters on the Moscow River. They resulted from an outline agreement they had clinched in late night talks Sunday as heads of Russia's state run natural gas monopoly, Gazprom and the Ukraine's Naftogaz. Several people froze to death while the natural gas was shut off, however.

Wind Energy

Posted by clare3

Steven Chu, the Nobel Laureate selected to be the next energy secretary, says the lack of high--voltage transmission lines is by far and away the biggest obstacle to expanding the use of wind power. He does agree, though, with taking authority away from states to decide where lines should go.

Some advocates of renewable electricity have advocated giving that authority to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. I think this is too much government involvement. The farmers own the land and they should be able to deal with members in their states as to where the wind farms will be located, not the government. Wind farms are sprouting up almost daily in our state. My husband feels it is ruining the land's view and they are ugly. There are probably more people who would agree with him.

Besides, we can't figure out how they are helping provide electricity when we have to pay to get electricity from them. We thought they were supposed to lower our bills, not raise them. Chu feels that if Congress does this, the states and local people in those states might react and I totally agree with him. Many landowners oppose the lines crossing their properties.

Yahoo Names Tech Veteran as New Chief Executive

Posted by clare3

Yahoo Inc. brought in a no-nonsense leader, known for developing a clear focus, into their company when they named technology veteran Carol Bartz as its new chief executive last Tuesday. During a three year slump, something that has eluded the struggling Internet company has been a clear focus. They needed someone who would get in there and get the job done and they feel she is the one to do it.

Yahoo has been searching for two months to replace co-founder Jerry Yang. Yang surrendered the chief executive reins after potentially lucrative deals with rivals Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. both collapsed. Therefore, the decision to lure Carol Bartz, age 60, from software maker Autodesk Inc. filled the gap left by Yang.

Man Expecting Tools Gets Marijuana

Posted by clare3

This is a really good one. A man in Denton, texas, who was expecting a shipment of tools instead received a 30 pound brick of marijuana that police say is worth more than $10,000. Can you imagine his surprise when he opened the package!

Officer Ryan Grelle says the man opened the box Monday night and realized it contained drugs and called the police. The package from the Pharr area was handled by UPS in McAllen on Jan. 6, and apparently was intended for a Dallas address. The Denton Record-Chronicle reports no such address exists in Dallas, so the package wound up 40 miles to the northwest at the similar address in Denton.

Did you even notice what dumb mistakes some of these drug guys make? They can be running drugs on the freeway and they speed and get picked up. Or they don't wear their seat belt and get picked up. It is always something really stupid. You would think if they were running drugs, they would do their utmost to obey every law so they wouldn't get stopped, now wouldn't you?

General Motors

Posted by clare3

General Motors Corp. said that it is basing its turnaround plan on the assumption that the auto industry will sell 10.5 million cars and trucks in the United States this year. That is a 1.5 million drop from the expectation it shared with Congress last month. With so many layoffs and cut backs in hours, who can afford to trade in their present vehicle for a new one?

While asking lawmakers for $18 billion in loans, the Detroit automaker said it expected industrywide sales of about 12 million for 2009, with 10.5 million seen as the worst case scenario. The Treasury Department allocated $13.4 billion in loans to General Motors last month. The company must submit a plan to show the Treasury Department that it is cutting enough costs to become viable, or the government can call back the loans March 31. That sounds reasonable to me.

Congress Approves Release of Final $350B of Bailout

Posted by clare3

Congress laid the foundation for President-elect Barack Obama's economic recovery plan on Thursday with remarkable speed. This cleared the way for a new infusion of bailout cash for the financial industry while majority Democrats proposed spending increases and tax cuts totaling a whopping $825 billion. Where is all this money coming from? Is the Treasury just printing it? They show on television, the presses rolling out money like there is no end to it. It brings to mind pictures of people in Germany taking wheel barrows of money to the store to buy a loaf of bread. If they aren't careful, deflation will destroy this great nation.

So far, they can't get the banks to tell them what was done with the first monies that they gave them and then they want them to give them more. The banks seem to be sitting on the money or investing it instead of the original purpose but no one really knows. That is what is scary. No one is tracking all this money.

Two days after Obama personally lobbied for release of $350 billion in bailout funds, the Senate narrowly turned aside a bid to block the money. Despite bipartisan anger over the Bush administration's handling of the program to date, Democratic allies of the incoming president prevailed on a 52-42 roll call. Where is it going to end?

New Jobless Claims Rise

Posted by clare3

While new jobless claims rise, the economy keeps shrinking. We are all wondering where it is going to end. Every day we hear of someone we know who is being laid off or having their hours cut back at the plant where they work. The number of newly laid off workers seeking unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, the latest sign that the economy is shrinking and unlikely to rebound any time soon.

The figures came a day after the government said retail sales dropped sharply in December and the Federal Reserve issued a gloomy economic assessment. Economists said the reports illustrate that the economy remains stuck in a downward cycle. Consumers initially cut back spending in response to the housing and credit crises, slowing the economy and leading companies to lay off workers. That spurs even more caution among consumers. Everyone is shopping just for the necessities and trying to get along without spending any more than they have to. I am sure a great many people have also stopped charging on their credit cards as well.

A Gas Transit Monitoring Deal by Ukraine

Posted by clare3

A gas transit monitoring deal was approved by the Ukraine. It was in regard to the European Union-led monitoring of Russian gas transit across its territory, opening the way for restarting Russian natural gas supplies to a freezing Europe after a four day halt in shipments. In the meantime, some people froze to death as it is very cold there and a large part of the countries went without any heat at all.

Russia wanted the written deal to renew gas shipments suspended amid a bitter contract dispute with the Ukraine. This move was seen by many as another attempt by Moscow to reassert its clout over Western leaning former Soviet republics. Russia said it needs European Union monitors deployed to Ukraine to prevent it from stealing Russian gas intended for Europe. Ukraine hotly denied the claims. I would tend to believe the Ukraine over Russia.

Costa Rica Quake Death Toll Rises to 16

Posted by clare3

There was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Costa Rica that caused a hillside to collapse near the town of Vara Blanca de Alajuela on Thursday last week. It damaged 6 miles of road and sent rocks and earth tumbling down on passing cars. Searchers found more bodies on Saturday in a restaurant that was buried under fallen earth. That brought the death toll to 16 as helicopters ferried residents and tourists out of a quake stricken region in Costa Rica. This was reported by the Red Cross.

Many of the dead were trapped inside their vehicles. They probably didn't know what hit them. Others were found in a small restaurant. Rescuers were using trained dogs and heavy machinery to search through the rubble. Freddy Roman, spokesman for the Red Cross said hope of finding more survivors was diminishing.

Senate Vote Boosts Wilderness Protection

Posted by clare3

In a rare Sunday session, the Senate advanced legislation that would set aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as wilderness. Majority Democrats assembled more than enough votes to overcome GOP stalling tactics in an early showdown for the new Congress. I don't quite understand this as I haven't kept up on it.

Republicans complained that Democrats did not allow amendments on the massive bill, which calls for the largest expansion of wilderness protection in 25 years. But Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, Democrat from Nevada and other Democrats said the bill, which was a holdover from last year, was carefully written and included measures sponsored by both republicans and Democrats. I wonder if the underlying cause of this is to prevent drilling for oil in the United States. I believe there is enough oil in the United States to make us completely free of other countries but no one is smart enough to do it.

Recycled Christmas Tree

Posted by clare3

That great big Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is 72 feet high. It is going to be milled into lumber and dried in a kiln for use in the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes in Brooklyn. This is a great way to recycle the big tree and make good use of the lumber to help families get new homes. Many of the people Habitat for Humanity helps have never had their own home before. What a wonderful endeavor.

In 2007, the big Christmas tree used that year was transformed into lumber to help build housing for Hurricane Katrina survivors. Also, in the past, the other Christmas trees have been used to make toys for animals in the Bronx Zoo and as mulch for hiking trails. What a great way to recycle these big trees.

Ann Hathaway looked absolutely gorgeous at the Golden Globe awards. She was a little troubled in that her ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri has pleaded guilty in a real estate scam. At the time, she said she was not too fussy when it came to men.

However, when asked what she looks for in a guy, she told TV host Ellen DeGeneeres, "At this point I would just like him to be law-abiding." That doesn't sound unreasonable to me, does it to you? I hope she finds a good honest man. She is such a pretty gal.

New York Restaurant Liberates A Lobster

Posted by clare3

News out of Kennebunkport, Maine says that there was a huge lobster that was destined to adorn a dinner plate. However, a New York City restaurant granted him a reprieve and he is back in the ocean. He would have made some kind of meal because he weighed in at 20 pounds. They had named him George and decided to return him to the wild Saturday in a rocky cove in Kennebunkport. It was less than a mile from the summer home of former President George H. W. Bush.

George had been transported to Maine by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. They had begged City Crab and Seafood to allow the lobster to go free. I think that is kind of crazy myself. However, the activist group said the giant lobster may be up to 140 years old. But I guess by conventional standards for guessing a lobster's age, it was put closer to 80 years. That's still an old lobster, it seems to me. It had been caught off Newfoundland, Canada. I wonder if such an old lobster is tough eating? What do you think?

Bad Weather Means Lots of Home Cooking

Posted by clare3

When the temperatures drop below zero and the snow is falling and the wind is blowing, it is a good time to stay in and dig out favorite recipes and do some good old home cooking. I made some chocolate chip cookies today along with some white chocolate cookies. They are VERY good.

Tomorrow we are having family in for a good casserole hot dish and hot bread pudding with half and half and sugar. It makes a terrific meal on a cold blustery day. I haven't made this hot dish for a long time so hope it turns out really good. My sister-in-law was expert at making it and it has lots of veggies and seasonings in it. I hope I can do it justice. Can't wait to make and bake it and taste it. YUM! The bread pudding recipe is out of my very old Betty Crocker cookbook and is still the best one we have ever had.

Easy Cooking

Posted by clare3

I'm going to do some easy cooking for supper tonight. I got some pollock and will cut it in small pieces about 1-2". Will dip it in beaten egg I whip with a small wire whip and then roll the pieces in crushed cracker crumbs. Put it into hot oil in a deep frying pan, turning when golden brown, salting a bit.

In the meantime, I will put some frozen hash browns in another frying pan to cook. I have some good California style frozen vegetables and some home baked fresh brown bread. I sliced it last night after it was done baking and it is delicious. It is really good toasted too with butter and jam.

Will have sliced canned pears cold out of the refrigerator for dessert along with ice cold milk and I am all set. It gives me plenty of time to post on my blogs and still have a good supper. Oh yes, I make my own tartar sauce easily with just a bit of sweet pickle relish stirred into some Miracle Whip. Sound good? It is.

John Travolta's Son Dies on Cruise Vacation

Posted by clare3

The Travoltas lost their son in death on vacation. An autopsy showed that a seizure was what killed him. He was only 16. He had suffered from Kawasaki disease since he was small but this was totally unexpected. You can't explain how it feels to lose a child until you have lost one yourself. We lost our oldest daughter at the age of 28, suddenly and it takes years to get over it and you really never do get over it.

A parent feels they should not outlive their children so when it happens, it is such a shock. It just isn't the normal pattern of life. He was a good looking boy too and their only son. Their other children will be a comfort to them but it will never be quite the same.

What a winter this has been. It seems like we have had so much snow since November and so much bitter cold weather. We did have one day it rained and took down the snow levels a little bit but we still have huge piles everywhere.

Now today the freezing rain started and by this afternoon we were supposed to get snow. I see the storm warnings running across the screen while the football games are on. Our neighbors got home safely just as it started. They had a l20 mile drive home and I was a little worried about when they would get here.

We had terrific winds in the night too but they seem to have calmed down now. The neighbor said it was so slick they slid by their driveway already so that isn't good. I think we will probably be staying in tomorrow.

Home Security

Posted by clare3

In this town, three young men broke into the home of an older man and murdered him. They knew he had quite a bit of money and they were out to get it. If this poor old gentleman would have had home security, he would probably be alive today.

There have been many break-ins since Meth and Cocaine sales have grown in this area and many other metropolitan cities, as well as, small towns. With ADT systems on the job 24/7, you do not have to worry about your possessions or your family. Their new Custom Touchpad with SafePass makes it so easy to arm and disarm. No more codes to try and remember or worry about your children giving them out to their friends.

Check out their Web Special. They also have security systems for Seniors. In case of illness, help is there at the touch of a button with their Personal Response system. Both small and large businesses alike will enjoy having the protection offered by ADT systems. The cost is low and the protection their system gives is invaluable.

Posted by clare3

Everyone knows that the name Gucci is synonymous with elegant and special. That certainly includes their watches. This is the website to shop for all the finest in Gucci watches, both mens and women's alike.

I had a great deal of fun going through all the selections of those watches and I found several men's watches that would certainly delight my husband for his birthday. This company not only provides you with the fastest service, but also the lowest prices, as well, for all name brand watches. Their goal is 100 percent customer satisfaction and if you read some of the testimonials you will find they live up to their word.

Their website is very easy to navigate and you can find just what you are looking for quickly. I found out that not only could I shop by brand, but could shop by color, style and price too. If you need some help, they have live chat as well as a toll-free phone number so you can talk to them right away. Have some fun and shop their website to find that perfect watch you have been looking for, but thought you couldn't afford.
