Venezuela Welcomes Russian Warships

Posted by clare3

Sounds like trouble ahead to me, how about you? On Tuesday, Russian warships sailed into port in Venezuela in a show of strength as Moscow seeks to counter U.S. influence in Latin America. Their first such deployment in the Caribbean since the Cold War is timed to coincide with President Dmitry Medvedev's visit to Venezuela, the first by a Russian president.

Dressed in black and white uniforms, Russian sailors lined up along the bow of the destroyer Admiral Chabanenko as it docked in La Guaira, near Caracas and Venezuelan troops greeted them with cannons in a 21-gun salute. President Hugo Chavez, basking in the support of a powerful ally and traditional U.S. rival, wants Russian help to build a nuclear reactor, invest in oil and natural gas projects and bolster his leftist opposition to U.S. influence in the region.

He also wants weapons. Venezuela has bought more than $4 billion in Russian arms, including Sukhoi fighter jets, helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles. More deals for Russian tanks or other weaponry may be discussed after Medvedev arrives. This sounds really bad.

Aid to Darfur

Posted by clare3

This poor country full of poor people has received aid from the U.N. for a long time. Now the U.N. humanitarian chief warned Tuesday that international aid for millions of Darfur residents cannot go on indefinitely. He also said the Sudanese government and rebels must negotiate a solution that would allow the displaced to return home.

John Holmes made the comments as he visited Kalma camp, home to around 100,000 of the more than 2.5 million people displaced by fighting in a large region of western Sudan since 2003. Earlier this month, Holmes appealed for $2.2 billion in donations to fund U.N. aid for Sudan. Most of this would go to Darfur. The world body is providing food and other supplies not only to residents of camps but also to 2 million more people in Darfur who are affected by the war and remain in their homes. I don't think the American people have seen or grasped the terrible situation in Darfur and what these poor people are going through.

Rockslide Threat at Yosemite

Posted by clare3

Last Friday, officials were prompted to permanently close some cabins in a popular Yosemite National Park lodge complex that has a long history of rockslides. There is an unstable cliff over those cabins. The National Park Service officials said 233 cabins in family friendly Curry Village will close permanently. That would be about one-third of the units available in the complex that includes stores and restaurants run by an outside company. About half of the 618 cabins have been off limits since a rockfall on October 8.

Federal geologists have warned for at least a decade that the granite face of Glacier Point above the village is dangerous. In spite of two deaths and an increase in the frequency and severity of the rockfalls since l996, park officials have been reluctant to act. More than 150 youngsters were on field trips when the equivalent of 570 dump trucks of rock hit 17 cabins where they were staying and flattened one at 6:55 a.m. This was the most recent incident and luckily most of the children were out of the cabins at the time and no one was injured. Officials will install educational exhibits explaining why the area was closed.

Large Meteor over Canada

Posted by clare3

Alan Hildebrand, University of Calgary planetary scientist, got about 300 email reports from witnesses that saw what appeared to be a speeding fireball Thursday night over Saskatoon. It became larger and brighter before disappearing as it neared the ground. Widely broadcast video images were shown of the speeding fireball. Now scientists say they are searching for remnants of a meteor that brilliantly lit up the sky before seemingly falling to earth in western Canada. I would have loved to have seen that, wouldn't you?

Alan Hildebrand called it one of the largest meteors visible in the country in the last decade. I have seen little meteor showers, probably as most people have, but I have never seen a really bright one like they saw in Canada. I have stood out on the deck in the middle of the night in the dead of winter to watch meteor showers and have been disappointed in the numbers I saw. It would really be neat to see a big one like they saw in Canada. It is all very exciting to me.

Fish Fry Friday Night

Posted by clare3

We went out to a different fish fry tonight. They had great Alaskan Walleye, both broiled and fried. Also, you could have your choice of several kinds of potatoes and a hot loaf of bread with lots of butter. The salad bar had some great bean soup with some toasted pieces of garlic bread, so crisp and good.

The salads and garnishes were almost too many to count. Additionally they had at least 5 different salads, plus pumpkin pie dessert fluff. That seems to be traditional in many of the restaurants we have gone to lately. It is different and definitely tastes like pumpkin pie but it is kind of rich and you can't eat much of it. Along with the usual potato salad, they had several pasta salads that were very good along with broccoli and cauliflower salad. There was much to top your lettuce salad with and if you walked away from there hungry, it was your own fault. My husband and I will be going back there again soon, I know.

Winter Forecast

Posted by clare3

They put out a winter forecast in our paper today and it said it looked likely to be mild in the Midwest. Yeah! I sure hope so. Last year was a lot of snow and cold and we would love a milder winter. Warmer than average temperatures are expected for the nation's center.

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said above normal readings are likely in a large area from New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and southern Wisconsin. We have a brother and sister-in-law in southern Wisconsin so they will be happy to hear that too. They seem to have a lot of ice when we get snow. I sure hope they are right because winter seems to be longer than Spring and Summer put together. It always stays cold often in May and June so the summer gets quite short.

Relief at the Pumps?

Posted by clare3

Did you know that U.S. motorists, stung by record gasoline prices, left the roadways in droves? They logged almost 11 billion fewer miles in September according to the Transportation Department. I know we cut down on all the driving we possibly could.

It was reported that oil slipped below the $54 a barrel mark on Wednesday as stock markets across the globe fell and they fell again today. The Department of Transportation also reported that Americans drove 90 billion fewer miles over the most recent 11 months of the fiscal year. Now that had to be quite a savings in gas usage in the U.S.

If we could just keep it up. If people could cut back that much due to gas prices, why not continue to cut back. They proved it can be done. I know when we needed to go to another town for doctor appointments, one day we scheduled 3 in 3 different places in a town 30 miles away and saved 2 extra trips which saved us gasoline. If we all do a little, it really adds up.

Arkansas Seizes More Children from Ministry

Posted by clare3

Stories of alleged beatings and sexual abuse prompted Arkansas child welfare officials to take custody of 20 more children associated with the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries Tuesday. In the meantime, authorities confirmed that a federal arrest warrant had been issued for a man accused of being Alamo's enforcer.

These children were 11 boys and 9 girls ranging in age from 1 to 17. They were taken into state care Tuesday at the same time that hearings were being conducted on whether six girls seized in September should remain under state protection or be returned to their parents. I really feel sorry for the kids, because many of them have no idea, I am sure, of what is going on, only that they have been taken away from their parents. It is so sad and such a mess

Alamo has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of transporting minors across state lines for sex. How sick! His trial is set for February. He has preached that the Bible allows girls to marry once they reach puberty but has said he didn't adopt the practice. However, assertions from prosecutors indicate otherwise. It is a good think I am not in charge, as his trial would be much shorter and he would not like the punishment!

Wildfires in California

Posted by clare3

The Santa Ana or Devil Winds, as they are also called, are blowing in California and spreading fire something awful. Today we found out the original fire was started by a bonfire built by a group of young adults gathering for a late night hangout at an abandoned property. As dry as California has been, you would have thought they would know better than to start any kind of a fire but apparently they didn't.

The weekend wildfire in Santa Barbara has destroyed 210 homes at last count, including the multimillion dollar mansions of many Hollywood celebrities and other prominent people. More than two dozen people have been injured as well and the hospitals were full Tuesday.

An anonymous tip led to the discovery that 10 college students had gathered where the fire originated, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown. He declined to say which college the students came from. There have been no criminal charges filed, but the county district attorney will review the case.

This is such a huge disaster they caused, it would be hard to figure out what the punishment would be. I am sure there would be no way they could repay those people who all lost everything.

Global Warming

Posted by clare3

On Tuesday, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger opened his international climate change summit by upstaging himself with an even bigger political star- President-elect Barack Obama. Obama, in a taped message to attendees, said his administration is committed to a cause that has all but languished at the federal level during the term of President George W. Bush.

A Republican, Schwarzenegger's, efforts to combat global warming in California, have generated worldwide acclaim. He wants to show that governments can balance environmental protection and economic growth. This is a great goal for him and his State. He hopes his summit will influence negotiations over a new climate treaty during a U.N. gathering in Poland next month. Let us hope he is right.

U.N. negotiators have a December 2009 deadline to complete the next global warming treaty. This would succeed the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. That treaty, which expires in 2012, does not include the U.S. or China - the world's largest emitters.

Fireplaces

Posted by clare3

There is nothing like the warm glow of a fireplace to make you feel at home. I just read the other day that wood burning fireplaces put particles into the air that can actually harm people's lungs. One woman was found to have emphysema and they believed it was caused by their wood burning fireplace. Now they have beautiful gas and electric fireplaces that will not harm you.

Our daughter and her husband have had a gorgeous gas fireplace installed in their family room. It really adds to the decor and warms a room that was always a bit cooler than the rest of the house. Now they can really settle in front of their television set with the fire going in the fireplace and be all cozy and warm. I think it is just great.

Freezing Cold Weather

Posted by clare3

This has been one of those days that you did not want to go outside. You wanted to stay in the warm house with a good book or do some baking. It was supposed to be our warmest day this week and if that is true, I do not look forward to the rest of the week.

We got up to lots of frost on everything and about 14 degrees. The wind was from the South so there was hope it would be warmer. The sun was even out for a couple of hours. But then it turned cloudy and the wind switched to the Northwest and instead of a high of 44 degrees today, it was about 32 and felt like 12.
We often go out to eat on Wednesday nights for Mexican but with wind gusts of 30-40 mph, we decided we would eat at home. Maybe tomorrow will be better. I sure hope so.

Home Security

Posted by clare3

With everyone in the family at work these days, gone to school, or off to college, it is more important than ever to have good home security. There have been so many break-ins in our area and the Police feel it is people looking for items such as electronics, to sell to buy drugs. Not only that, but if you are gone and a fire starts in your home, your security system can alert the Monitoring Center and they will quickly get hold of the fire department.

Older seniors, such as we are, find that a good security system is very important in case one of us takes sick suddenly or a heart attack, I would be able to contact ADT and they in turn would contact the proper medical personnel and get an ambulance on the way. It would give you such a sense of relief to know there is help at hand 24/7.

With ADT's Safewatch iCenter touch-screen, you can do a great many things. You can arm and disarm various parts of your home. You can have it pick up your telephone messages, or program it for weather, sports scores, news and much more. Not only that but every member of the family can program it to suit themselves and all can arm and disarm the system when necessary.

I like the idea of having it turn on the lights for safety sake. You never know who might be lurking in your dark home but you would never have to enter a dark house again with this system. Amazingly, you can call from anywhere in the world and check the status of your security system. It isn't just a security system but a home communications system because it can do so many things for you. Check out their website. I believe you will be amazed and ready to order your system to protect you and your family not just from burglary, but carbon monoxide, unexpected flooding and so much more.

Birthdays

Posted by clare3

It was my brother's birthday last week and I finally got his present together. It is a little late but it is just what he needed and wanted, so I know he will be happy with it. He is 3 years younger than I am and I can remember the night he was born just like it was yesterday.

He was born at our home in a little town. My Dad and I laid on a blanket at the top of the stairs waiting for my "Little Brother" to arrive. I have often wondered over the years how I would have felt if he had turned out to be a sister after waiting for a brother for so long. Anyway the word came, and the doctor said my little brother was here! And it was a little brother with black hair! My Mom was lying in a big double bed in a room at the bottom of the stairs and I remember there was a white bedspread on the bed. Tucked under her arm was a little head with black hair - my brother!!

It was so exciting. We have always been very close all our lives and that is really neat. Eleven years later a little sister joined us and that was fun for us because we were 8 and 11 years old and watched the baby sister grow up. Now we are all adults, have been married and visit each other from time to time.

Chemical Treadmill Test

Posted by clare3

My brother told me he was going to have a treadmill test tomorrow. I knew he couldn't walk on a treadmill so we discussed it. He said they give them an injection that speeds up the heart, while sitting, much the same as walking on a treadmill would do. It will be interesting to see what the results of his test are.

My sister-in-law has had several of those and did fine with them. It is a good thing for people who have bad knees and just can't walk on a treadmill the way it takes to test the heart. I'll find out later tomorrow how he came through the test. It takes two or three days to get the results.

4,300 Year Old Queen?

Posted by clare3

In Egypt, archaeologists have discovered a new pyramid under the sands of Saqqara. This is an ancient burial site that has yielded a string of unearthed pyramids in recent years but remains largely unexplored. They are thinking that this may be the 4,300 year old monument that most likely belonged to the queen mother of the founder of Egypt's 6th Dynasty. That is very interesting to me because I am interested in archaelogy.

This pyramid was probably built several hundred years after the famed Great Pyramids of Giza. This was according to antiquities chief Zahi Hawass who announced the find on Tuesday. Now, all that remains of the pyramid is a 16 foot tall structure that had been buried under 65 feet of sand all these years.

Emry Turns One Year Old

Posted by clare3

It is hard to believe but little baby Emry is quite grown up and is now one year old. They grow up so fast and pretty soon he will be walking and then running and Mom won't be able to keep up with him. They are so much fun at every age. We wish we could see them more but it is nice to have pictures on the internet to keep up with him growing.

It won't be long until it is Christmas time and maybe they will get to come home from Texas for Christmas. That would sure be nice and we could see how much he has changed since last Christmas. He is such a smiley little guy and loves everyone and everything.

Blogging

Posted by clare3

If you have never had a blog, then you do not know what you are missing. It is so much fun to write about the everyday things that happen in your lives. You can write about your family especially. I love to write about my grandchildren and great grandchildren as they are such a delight in my life.

Not only can you write about your life and what's happening here, but you can write about the Current Events that are going on around you in the world. If you are into Sports, it is fun to write about your favorite teams or the World Series or the Golf and Basketball Tournaments.

You can even make money blogging for various companies. In that way, you not only make some money to help out with those little extra expenses that come up, but money for fun too. And I find by blogging for advertisers, I learn so much about other countries, cities, hotels and so much more. So if you haven't started blogging yet, maybe you ought to try it and see just how much fun it is.

Hurray for the Pumpkin Pie

Posted by clare3

I just love pumpkin pie with gobs of Cool Whip on it. I have to have some Cool Whip with every bite. Yum Yum There is just nothing like it. This is the time of year when you see a lot of pumpkin pie but I like it all year round. It is always good in Spring or Summer to make some because you had it during the Holidays and usually don't make it after that.

I don't like my pumpkin pie made with pumpkin pie spice either. That is a heartburn just waiting to happen. So instead I substitute 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and if it calls for condensed milk, I use 1 2/3 cups of 2% milk for a 15 ounce can of pumpkin. Bake at 350 till knife comes out clean stuck in the center, about an hour.

Neighbors cats

Posted by clare3

Whenever the neighbors are gone, they call on me to watch their cats. I make sure they are fed and they have plenty of water. Sometimes Ely spills over the automatic waterer and have to clean that up and fill it up again for them.

They have an automatic kitty litter box that is really neat. It runs every so often and scoops the kitty litter into a little box on the end so the litter is clean again. The box has a built in place for the lid so you clip it on the box and never have to touch anything and then throw it out and put in a new box. It is quite unique.

In exchange for taking care of the cats, they will let our little dog, Holly, out when we are gone so it is a win win situation, neighbors helping neighbors.

Eye Doctor Appointment

Posted by clare3

My husband had his cataracts removed a couple of months ago. What a difference it made in his vision. He went from not being able to see without his glasses to being able to see without his glasses. He has a pair but they are more for reading now. However, they have a bit of correction in the top portion for astigmatism, something everyone over 40 seems to get eventually.

He has to be there at 1:00 so that will interrupt his usual nap and he hates that. But it will be good to have his eyes checked once again since the surgery and then he doesn't go back for a year. He really enjoys having 20-20 vision. It is wonderful, he says, to see how bright the colors are, especially white and blue. I have heard others with cataract surgery say exactly the same thing. We are very fortunate to have good eye doctors who do such fantastic surgery to restore sight.

Thanksgiving Turkey

Posted by clare3

It will not be long until it is Thanksgiving. It seems to be later this year and closer to Christmas. Turkey seems to be the all time favorite meat for Thanksgiving. Mashed potatoes, that wonderful flavorful turkey gravy, and all the trimmings make a fine meal.

With all the salads, vegetables, breads and desserts, everyone really overeats and then all are ready for a nap. It is also a time when many families take a great many pictures too. I hope it does not snow this year so that travel will be good for everyone. Many people have to travel quite a ways to be with their families. I would never travel by plane on a Holiday because it seems thousands always get stranded in airports, sleeping in the chairs or on the floor. That is not my idea of fun at all. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

The Weather Outside is Frightful

Posted by clare3

But the fire inside is so delightful. And since we have no place to go - let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Famous words to a famous song. We didn't get much snow. Not as much as they thought we would get and I am sure glad of that. I am attaching a picture taken out the window to show you what snow we got.

Making a nice warm supper tonight. Warm biscuits from the oven, hot chocolate pudding to go along with hot chicken noodles and smoked pork chops. Yum Yum. I guess you call that comfort food. I went to the store and the wind made my eyes water it was so cold. They say it is 31 here but feels like 17 and they are sure right about that. The trees are really swaying. Any old or bad trees will blow down in this wind. I am just so glad we didn't get feet of snow like South Dakota.

Powerful Weather in South Dakota

Posted by clare3

Snow fell in feet instead of inches in South Dakota leaving many motorists stranded. The winds were above 60 miles an hour and there was no way to get to stranded motorists until the wind died down.

This is kind of early to get so much snow but they did. I think with this much snow, it is going to be hanging around for the rest of the winter. We always hate to get snow early when it is very cold because from there on, more just piles on top of it. So far we have had just enough to barely cover the ground and if the sun comes out, it will probably melt away. Our wish would be for it to wait till after New Years, but we have no choice in the matter. It has been a cold fall and it looks like a very cold winter ahead too. The almanac said it will be a "numbing" winter which doesn't sound good at all.

Clint Eastwood May Quit Acting

Posted by clare3

Clint Eastwood has the starring role in "Gran Torino" but he is hinting that it may be his last acting job. Clint is 78 years old now, and he both directs and stars in the movie but he believes it will be his last turn as an actor. He plays a Viet Nam Veteran in the movie.

He has cut back on his acting career in recent years to concentrate on directing. In 2005, his last role was in "Million Dollar Baby". He told Ireland's Sunday World newspaper, "It'll probably be my last. I'll be drummed out of it after his one."

I don't know about you but he has always been one of our favorites and always does a superb job of acting in anything he has done. His movies "Dirty Harry" were great and I think we saw every one of them.

The Three Stooges

Posted by clare3

I just love all the old comedy programs. The Three Stooges is just one of those shows. They show them a lot on Saturday morning so we watch quite a few of them. They never seem to grow old. They are always good for a laugh and a laugh is good for you.

I am glad they have a station or two that carry these old time shows. Laurel and Hardy are also on Saturday mornings and it seems like no matter how many times you watch them, they are funny all over again. I hope these old shows will always be around. I think the young people of today are missing out on a great deal by not watching the funny shows of yesteryear.

President Elect Barack Obama

Posted by clare3

Our new President elect is Barack Obama. No matter which side you were on, or who you voted for, we have a historical event here. The people of the United States have elected their first black President. We have always said this is a free country and anyone who qualifies can become President and this is proof that is true.

There were many seats in both the House and Senate up for grabs and the Democrats won quite a few of them, making them the majority in both. Nancy Pelosi has got to be a happy woman. There wasn't much said, but I heard she was up for re-election too. Whether or not that was true, she still has her job. I really think though that there should be limits on how many times you can be re-elected to Congress as some have been in there a lifetime and an 84 year old was re-elected again last night. People worried about the possibility of McCain being too old a man to be President. What about those in Congress?

Grandpa and Grammy and Grandchild

Posted by clare3

It was the first birthday for grandpa and grammy's first grandchild on Saturday but they also celebrated on Sunday. She had a really neat birthday cake as you can see. She got a piece of it herself so she could really get into it and get it all over trying to get it in her mouth. They are so much fun to watch. You can tell grandpa and grammy really love this little one. They have a second grandchild who is just 13 days older and will have a birthday a Nov 13. These little ones are first cousins. What a prize they are. So much fun.

QWest Third Quarter Profit Down

Posted by clare3

Another company reports poor profits. Qwest Communications International Inc. posted a profit for its third quarter Wednesday, but they said the continued slide of its traditional phone business is forcing it to cut 1,200 jobs or 3% of its work force. I wonder if that is because more people are using their cell phones and dropping their landlines. We still have our landline but we have dropped long distance completely from it.

Qwest says the cuts will come before the end of the year. This will leave the company with 33,500 employees, which is 9 percent fewer than at the end of last year. That is about the same rate at which customers are canceling their phone service to go wireless or sign up with cable companies. Just as I thought, and I know my brother has signed up with a cable company. I just hate to see all these people being laid off right at Thanksgiving and Christmas time all over the country. That really hurts and takes so much joy out of the season of joy. I know it is tough but it has to harder on families with children.

The Denver-based phone company is the third largest and earned $151 million, or 9 cents per share in the three months that ended September 30. That was down 93 percent from $2.06 billion, or $1.08 per share, a year ago, but those 2007 results were boosted by a $2.1 billion tax benefit. That's a terrific drop.

NASA - Mercury Has Volcanoes

Posted by clare3

I thought this was quite interesting. Isn't it something how we can see what is going on with the other planets these days? Now we, on earth, have had the first nearly full look at Mercury. The NASA probe shows that the tiny lifeless planet took a far greater role in shaping itself than was first thought. It has volcanoes spewing a mysterious dark blue material.

They have gotten new images from NASA's Messenger space probe. They should help settle a decades old debate about what caused parts of Mercury to be somewhat smoother than it should be. Wednesday, NASA released photos from Messenger's fly-by earlier that gave the answer. There is a lot of volcanic activity on Mercury, far more than signs from an earlier probe. Don't you find that very interesting? What will they find out next? I think it is quite exciting.

Obesity Blamed for Diabetes Growth

Posted by clare3

We all have heard that our nation has an epidemic of obesity that is taking a heavy toll on our population. The rate of new diabetes cases nearly doubled in the past 10 years here in the United States. The highest rates are in the South according to the first state by state review of new diagnoses. Of all the states, West Virginia was the worst. There, 13 in 1,000 adults were diagnosed with the disease in 2005-2007, Minnesota had the lowest rate of 5 in 1,000.

Nationally, the rate of new cases has climbed from about 5 in 1,000 in the mid l990's to 9 per 1,000 in the middle of this decade. Roughly 90 percent of cases are Type 2 diabetes, the form linked to obesity. I went to the dietitian because they thought my own glucose was too high and she told me they are seeing more and more cases in children as young as 10 years old with Type 2 diabetes. I was able to lose weight and change my diet and exercise at least 30 minutes a day and get my glucose under control. Not everyone is as lucky. I learned that sitting in front of the computer and eating and no exercise was killing me. Those couch potato children with Playstation are in grave danger of not getting exercise and getting Type 2 diabetes.

Family Night and Television

Posted by clare3

We just love to sit down in front of our new HDTV Television set with a big bowl of popcorn and a glass of cold Pepsi and watch our favorite programs. One of the programs that is my favorite is NCIS. They keep you interested from the beginning to the end.

Mark Harmon has always been one of my favorite actors. Some of you may not know that he was Ricky Nelson's brother-in-law. Ricky married Mark's sister. He is a terrific actor and I have never seen him in a bad movie or program. He always gives his best and makes each character he plays come to life. He has a great crew working with him on the program too.
