About Me
We have 4 married children and we all have born again Christian homes, for which I am very thankful. We are delighted to see this passed down from generation to generation. I am a people person and love visiting, and helping them too, in any way I can. I love a good cup of hot tea with friends, neighbors, or family. And now blogging has become my latest passion, many thanks to a wonderful grandson. May you all find the joy, peace and happiness in our Lord Jesus Christ that I have found.
Jennifer Hudson's Mother,Brother,Nephew Murdered
Posted by clare3
It was shocking to learn on the news that Jennifer Hudson's mother and brother had been murdered in their home. But worse yet, her 7 year old nephew was missing. Later we learned that the nephew had been murdered also and left in a car. How heartbreaking! Labels: Jennifer Hudson, Murders, Relatives of hers
A convicted felon, William Balfour, was arrested after the police allegedly found crack cocaine in his car in June, but at the time authorities declined to return him to prison on a parole violation. That was a bad mistake. A judge dismissed the charge for lack of probable cause in July. However, because of the strict rules of the state's parole program, he could have gone back to prison just for the arrest. How many times now have we heard where a judge let someone go and they went out and did something worse yet? Do you ever watch America's Most Wanted? Case after case is reported on there of just such happenings.
Balfour has been named as a suspect even though no one has been charged in the shooting deaths of Jennifer's mother, brother and nephew. But Chicago Police Superintendent, Jody Weis said on Tuesday he is confident the case will be solved. I certainly hope so and he isn't let go again to kill someone else.

Texas Executes Rapist
Posted by clare3
Tuesday, a former plumbing supply salesman was executed for strangling and raping a 7 year old girl and then he hid her body in his attic. The warden asked him if he had any final statements but he said he didn't. His name was Eric Nenno. Labels: Current Events, Execution in Texas
Eight minutes after the lethal drugs began to flow, he was pronounced dead. Among the witnesses were the girl's father and grandfather. The killer did not acknowledge that they were there. I don't think I could watch something like that even if it had been my child.
Eric Nenno, age 47, had confessed to the abduction and attack on Nicole two days after she disappeared. She was at her dad's birthday party almost 14 years ago when he kidnapped her. He then led officers to her remains in his home in Hockley, about 35 miles northwest of Houston. Imagine him keeping her body in his house 14 years? I think it is too bad they couldn't have found her body sooner and executed him 14 years ago.
Northeast Snowstorm Closes Highways & Schools
Posted by clare3
It was the first big snowstorm of the season in the Northeast. It closed sections of major highways on Tuesday and cut off electricity to more than 100,000 utility customers. A winter storm warning was posted by the National Weather Service for parts of New York State. They also issued winter storm advisories for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Vermont. Labels: much snow, Northeast, Weather Reports
A spokesman for the New Jersey turnpike Authority said it looked like a mini blizzard in October. They were salting the roads and it isn't even time yet for trick and treating. This is way too early. Up to a foot of snow was possible in parts of upstate New York. Our local weather girl is from there and I bet she is glad right now that she is living here instead.
The wind was blowing at 25 mph and gusting to 40 mph. There was as much as 9 inches of snow forecast in Vermont's mountains according to the weather service. As of Tuesday afternoon, up to 13 inches of snow had fallen in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. I am sure glad it is there and not here.
Designer Costume Jewelry

I love jewelry of every kind. I must have a hundred pair of earrings, but I am always looking for more. Necklaces are a favorite too and a beautiful pin on your blouse, dress or sweater really sets it off. But I can't always afford the pieces I would like but now I can get designer costume jewelry at this online website. They have beautiful delicately designed jewelry of every kind. What is neat about buying from them is that once it is created, they check it twice before sending it out to you to make sure it perfect. Not only that, but you will not meet yourself on the street, so to speak, with everyone wearing the same necklace, for example. That is because their jewelry is not sold in stores but is unique to their site. Labels: Designer Costume Jewelry, unique
World Series - Game 5 - Phillies Win
Posted by clare3
After two days of miserable rain, the Rays and the Phillies met to play the last 3 innings of the World Series. The Phillies won it and they are now the champions. They had been the butt of many jokes but no more. Now they can stand proud as the winners. Labels: Phillies beat Rays, Sports, Win World Series
The field was covered by a tarp to help stop it from getting more muddy than it was on Monday night. That was the first World Series game ever suspended due to rain but they had changed the rules last year. The game was tied with a score of 2-2 when it was called, but then the Phillies finished it off with a big win. I am sure there was a great deal of celebrating last night and with good reason.
Phillies 3-1 Lead Over Rays-World Series Game 4
Posted by clare3
Labels: World Series Game 4
The Phillies really did good Sunday night. Even the pitcher knocked a ball into the seats. Joe Blanton became the first pitcher in 34 years to homer in the World Series. He drove in five runs with two homers and the Phillies romped over the Tampa Bay Rays l0-2 on Sunday night. This gave their frustrated fans and Ryan Howard and the Philadelphia Phillies more evidence that this really might be their year. They are now within one win of their first championship since l980.
Not only that but Jayson Werth also homered as the Phillies took a 3-1 lead in the best of seven series. Cole Hamels will try to close out the Phillies' second Series title tonight. He is trying to become the first pitcher to win five postseason starts in one year. Of the 42 teams to take 3-1 World Series leads, 36 have gone on to win the crown. I hope they do it. l980 was a long time ago.
Can you imagine what it will be like if they win? Ryan Howard said it is kind of scary to imagine as it will be absolute bedlam. It will be one of the craziest places on Earth he said. Just so the fans try to keep their heads about them and don't tear up the town. Bad stuff happens sometimes when people over celebrate.
Snow in October
Posted by clare3
We had terrible weather today. The winds were sustained at 35 miles an hour plus gusts up to 60 miles an hour. It is only October 26 and way to early for snow here. The farmers do not have the corn combined yet. About 4:30 today we had snow for about 2 hours. It covered the green grass and the roofs and with the winds, it looked like a regular blizzard. Labels: High Winds, snow, weather
Yesterday was absolutely beautiful. It was about 60 degrees and very sunny and warm. You hardly needed more than a sweater and the winds slowed down. Then overnight it changed to 34 degrees today and you did not even want to be out in it no matter how warmly you were dressed. I hope we have sun tomorrow so the sun will melt the snow. It is way to early for it to stick around.
Birthday Party
Posted by clare3
We are going to a surprise birthday party today. It is a 40th birthday so we had to think up a good gag gift. Have it all wrapped in the Sunday store ads and got a really funny card to go along with it. The person has not got an inkling of the party this afternoon, so it will be a real surprise. It is fun to do things like this for people you know and enjoy. Labels: Friend, Surprise party, weather
The weather is starting to straighten up a little finally. I think the rain has stopped although it is still cloudy. I hope the sun comes out by this afternoon. It gets almost depressing to have cloudy, cold, clammy, rainy days for days on end. There is just something about a good dose of sunshine that makes everyone feel better and changes your mood for the better. The party should put everyone in a happy mood.

Concerned About Husband's Health
Posted by clare3
We have been concerned about my husband's health for some time now. I decided he was going to the doctor whether he wanted to or not. He was having major stomach cramps and had a sore spot he could find on his abdomen. Labels: Doctor Appointment, Family, Health
We went to the doctor today and she checked him over and told him it was a bowel problem and gave him an easy solution to take care of it. Take a juice glass of prune juice daily with an ounce of Milk of Magnesia mixed in it and you don't even taste it. It is better for you than taking laxatives as you become too accustomed to them.
Additionally, you warm the juice just 20 seconds in the microwave because we learned that warm things make the bowl react whereas cold does just the opposite. He also had to have a big shot in shoulder for bursitis. He has it elevated now with a cold pack and will feel lots better tomorrow.

Family Goes To the Movies
Posted by clare3
My husband was just telling me the other day, that he only went to the movies once, that he remembers, as a child. He couldn't have been very old, maybe 10 or less. He can't remember what the occasion was or why they went but it was the only time they went. His dad took them and he doesn't remember which of his brothers were along or if any sisters went. Labels: Family, Little Miss Muffet, Movie
He was amazed at the big screen and he doesn't remember one thing about the movie. But he does remember there was a cartoon. And all he remembers about that cartoon were the words "eating her curds and whey". So it must have been a cartoon about Little Miss Muffet but he doesn't remember anything else. Isn't that strange? That made such an impression on him he has never forgotten it in at least 70 years or more.
You could ask kids today who Little Miss Muffet was and I bet they haven't a clue. There are so any old nursery rhymes that have been forgotten. My Mom said she taught me all of them.

Neck and back injuries are not visible and it takes a doctor to diagnose your problem and tell you if it is related to the rear end accident. Do not hesitate to find out if you have a case while your doctor bills are piling up. It may be too late.
Shopping and Errands

There never seems to be an end to the number of errands that a person has to do to keep up with daily life in your household. I am mainly responsible for going after everything so I make many lists to be sure I get everything in one trip. I like to line up my list in the order of the stores too, so that it saves gas.
Today I had to run to the Hardware Store and order salt for the water softener. It holds four 50 pound bags and they deliver it to our door and bring it in and put it in the container. That is so nice as it is too much for either myself or my husband to manhandle those 50 pound bags of salt.
Next was a run to the Pharmacy. They have a new building now with a drive through window that really makes it very handy. It helps that you don't have to park and run into the store and wait at the counter. It was especially nice today as it was raining real hard.
Then it was on to the grocery store and took a bunch of Pepsi cans back for recycling and the extra cash I spent on groceries. I went in with a very short list and came out with two bags full of stuff. Ended up buying some extra meat to put in the freezer for future meals. They are remodeling part of the store and the parking lot is going to be blacktopped so things are kind of unhandy right now but it will sure be nice when it is all finished.
After a stop to pick up the mail, it was home to unpack the groceries and put away everything. Guess we will go out to eat tonight so I don't have to fix supper. I love that.

But a big item on the agenda is Christmas cards and they take a great deal of time to prepare and get mailed early. The Post Office is jammed with mail and they appreciate early mailing. Do you do a family update letter? If so, now might be the time to start thinking of what you will put in it.
Time creeps up on us and before we know it we are stressed out and have so many other things to do like baking and wrapping gifts. So why not start thinking about your Christmas cards now before everything gets so hectic? Enjoy the Holidays more.

Halloween Kids & Homemade Treats
Posted by clare3
The neighbors have a number of kids that come around every year trick & treating. It is fun to see their costumes and they are all excited about the candy they are going to get. Little Holly barks at their costumes and doesn't know what is going on. Labels: fun, Halloween costumes, treats
I remember when we were kids, sometimes the people would ask us into their house and then ask us to do a trick for them. Of course, we were bashful and at a loss for words or we could have sung a little song or something for them.
In those days, all the grandmotherly type women were stay at homes, and they would make homemade cookies and candy apples. They would also make popcorn balls and my brother always looked forward to those most. They were his favorite. We got lots of homemade fudge and candy but now days, you have to be so careful, unless you absolutely know the people, you can't take a chance with homemade goodies anymore. You have to throw away perfectly good things that the grandmas went to a lot of time and trouble to make just for the kids.
All this is because there have been some crazies out there that put razor blades in apples and stuff in candy and you aren't sure what is safe. Even pre-wrapped candy that came from the store isn't always safe. It is sad that this has to take away from the kids fun.
I think it is great that our church and other churches are having parties for the kids and pass them out safe treats that they can take home and their parents know they are safe to eat. And the kids have fun bobbing for apples and some of the old time fun we used to have. Times have really changed and not always for the better.
Crockpot Roast for Supper
Posted by clare3
One of the easiest dishes to make for a wonderful supper is a crockpot roast. First you buy the best cut of roast beef. We have a great deal of Black Angus cattle around this area, so we are privileged to get the best cuts of fine beef. Labels: Cooking Crockpot Roast
Once you have gotten a good roast, then you get out your crockpot. Put a couple of cups of hot water in it and turn it on low. Sprinkle some onion salt and garlic salt in the water and stir well till dissolved.
In the meantime, sprinkle the roast with onion salt and garlic salt on both sides and put it in a small amount of oil in a deep frying pan. Brown it on every side. Then add it to your crockpot. You can do this at 9:00 am if you are going to church or somewhere and leave it on low with the lid on it.
Then about noon, turn it on high and about 2 pm add a couple of whole onions, depending on how many onions your family will eat and if they like onions. They give the gravy a wonderful flavor. Also clean and cut as many fresh carrots as your family will eat and add them to the pot. Be sure and use a hot mit because the lid will be hot if it is like my crockpot. Then about 4 pm, I add as many whole peeled potatoes as needed for the family and let them cook. About 5 pm thin some flour for gravy or cornstarch, whichever is your favorite. Take out the onions, potatoes and carrots and put them in a large flat serving dish.
Get out your electric knife. Take out the roast and place it on a plate so that you can slice it thin. Be sure to cut it against the grain so it is extra tender to eat, not stringy. Then pour the juice out of the crockpot into a large saucepan, heat and thicken with your flour mixture to the consistency you like. Check it for saltiness. If too salty, add a little water to taste. Put it all on the table and serve with cold milk or your favorite beverage, bread, butter, jam or apple butter. I like to have a cold dish of sliced peaches ready for dessert. It is easy and a wonderful supper.
Weather Reports
Posted by clare3
The weatherman says we are in for a hard freeze tonight, about 29 degrees. That should take care of a lot of the flowers. My husband mulcher mowed the lawn today for what he figures will be the last time for this year. The Northwest wind was so cold, he never broke into a sweat for the first time this year. That way we don't need to rake any leaves.
Additionally, it sounds like we are in for rain on Wednesday and isolated showers Thursday and Friday. That on top of cold temperatures doesn't sound like fun weather to be out in. I feel sorry for the guys who are in construction that have to keep working no matter what.
My neighbor said relatives of theirs out in Idaho had 22 inches of snow. Now I can stand a little frost, I don't need any snow at all this winter. However, I think we usually get 32 inches or more and probably will again this year. I like looking out the window and watching a blizzard-like day but I know it is terrible for those who have to drive quite a few miles to get to work each day because we did it for years.
It is almost November and hurricane season should at least be over with. I bet the people around the gulf of Mexico will be very happy for that. I sure would be. I would not want to live there in the first place.
Get out the winter coats. Put the sheet blankets on the beds. Turn on the electric blankets and settle in for a long winter.

Grocery Shopping
Posted by clare3
Our grocery store is in the midst of a complete remodeling job and overhaul. They are going to move the entrance and cover it with a big canopy so you can stay dry in bad weather as you drive up to get your groceries. At 6 pm tonight they are going to close until Wednesday, as they are going to blacktop their entire parking lot and it really needs it.
However, with the store being closed, I decided I better quick get down there today and get some milk and eggs and butter. Have you noticed that a gallon of 2% milk costs about as much as a gallon of gas these days? Butter wasn't all that far behind either and eggs are still a pretty good bargain.
My Mom used to tell me when she was young, eggs were 10 cents a dozen and bread was 20 cents a loaf. Boy, those days are sure far gone. I don't seem to be able to get out of the grocery store for less than $15 anymore and usually $40 if I get much of anything at all. But I am very thankful there is plenty of food on the shelves and in the freezers whereas many countries are starving and have nothing which is so sad. We have to count our blessings. We need to be thankful both that we have the money and that we have the groceries in the stores to buy with that money.
Surprise 40th Birthday Party
Posted by clare3
We are invited to a surprise 40th birthday party for a young friend from our church. I think it will really be fun. I have had a great deal of fun wrapping the present. I found a variety of various size boxes and wrapped each box in store ad paper, like Sears, Kohls, etc. Labels: Friends, Surprise party
Then I put in two old VCR tapes, one is old time cartoons and they have 4 kids and wrapped it in ad paper too. Also had another funny tape I think they will all enjoy and wrapped it too in ad paper to make the box heavier as the gift itself maybe weighs next to nothing. Then stuffed the big box with more add paper and wrapped the big box in colorful local newspaper. It will be a ball watching him open it. Got a funny card to go with it so we are all set. I hope he doesn't get an inkling of what is going on and is totally surprised. They are having it at the YMCA. Surprise parties are a great deal of fun.
Ladies Tea
Posted by clare3
Saturday I was invited to a Ladies Tea. I had never been to one before. You were supposed to dress up and wear white gloves and a hat. Well, I haven't owned a ladies hat for many many years and white gloves?? Who wears white gloves?? Well, I got to thinking that we had some old white gloves in a drawer that we used years ago and dug them out. Yes, I thought - they will do. Labels: Gloves, Hat, Ladies Tea
But what about a hat? Then I got to thinking of a black hat way up in the closet that was given to my husband as a joke on his birthday one year. It says "Genuine Antique Person" on top and on the brim it says "Been there, done that." Well, I thought, it will go with my dark purple outfit and dark shoes so I put it on. It is a wonder you didn't hear my husband when I came out dressed in that outfit. He said I had more nerve that he has to wear that hat in public, let alone among a bunch of fine ladies. But I did, and I had a ball.
Ready for Church?
Posted by clare3
Yes, we were ready for church this morning. It was a special day at church. It was Harvest Sunday. We had a lot of special music and a flag presentation that was really colorful and neat. Then they took up a special Harvest Offering. Labels: Baptizems, church, Harvest Sunday, Lunch
After that nearly a dozen people were baptized and told of their salvation and love for the Lord Jesus. One whole family was baptized along with many other children of all ages and some of their parents. Another pastor came from another church to baptize part of his family himself. It was very special.
After church, a free will offering lunch was served. Everyone was invited to eat whether or not they had any money to contribute. They had a contest and 10 people made chili and 10 people made cinnamon rolls. They had a special panel of judges to see who was the winner in each division. Many other deserts and drink were also provided and a good time was had by all. It was a beautiful fall day and the sun came out and you didn't even need a coat. It was quite chilly when we left for church so that was a nice surprise too.
Tropical Storm Omar
Posted by clare3
Does it seem to you that we are having a bad year for tropical storms and hurricanes? It does to me. Now tropical storm Omar is moving through the northern Caribbean. By late Thursday, it was moving out to sea but not before it delivered a glancing blow to the U.S. Virgin Islands. St. Croix, the most populated island was lashed by rain. Labels: Bad Weather, Hurricane, Tropical Storm
Early Thursday morning Omar was passing between St. Martin and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. At that time it was a powerful hurricane. It was good that it downgraded to a tropical storm, but it can still do a great deal of damage before it is through. Here we are up to "O" in the alphabet already and there is still time to go before hurricane season is over.

Winnebago Profits Fall 93% in 2008
Posted by clare3
In this area Winnebago is the No. 1 employer. At their peak they had over 3500 employees in four plants in 4 towns. Now they have about l920 employees in three towns and had to close one plant in one of those towns and move the work back to the main plant in Forest City. They have cut their workforce by 42% since August 2007. Labels: profits fall 93%, Winnebago Industries
I worked there in Personnel for 25 years and I saw some tough times, but Winnebago always comes out of it. I think this is the hardest hit yet in all the years they have been in business. The workers are hanging in there though and work one week on and one week off but they are still working and drawing unemployment inbetween. At one time we had 7 members of our immediate and extended family working there all at the same time. It was very good to us and has wonderful benefits.
The Wall Street bust, I am sure, has taken its toll on the 401k's of everyone at Winnebago but unless they are retiring immediately, they can hang on and it will come back too. The median age used to be in the mid thirties for workers and probably still is so they have time till retirement. We are all rooting for Winnebago as every family around here is affected in one way or another.

Mother Indicted for Murder
Posted by clare3
At last, the mother of a missing 3-year old girl was accused last Tuesday in an indictment of killing her daughter. There has been an exhaustive four month search for the little girl and they have not found her body. However, a grand jury returned charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter and four counts of lying to investigators against Casey Anthony. This was all in the case of the death of her daughter, Caylee, according to State Attorney. Lawson Lamar. Labels: Missing Child, Murder Charges
They are holding the mother without bond and if you have been watching this unfold on television, it has been suspicious from the start. The mother gave one story after another about her child and even the grandmother was suspicious. The mother went out dancing and partying even though she was missing her daughter. It was time justice was done in this case.
Beatle Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr has had it with publicity and fans bugging him with so much mail and asking for signed photos. He has spent so much time in his 45 years of stardom, answering all those letters and mailing out all those photos and he just plain doesn't want to do it anymore. He has said he doesn't want to hear from you and if you write him, he is going to throw it in the trash. I guess they are calling it fan fatigue. The Beatle drummer even went so far as to post a short video clip on his Website telling fans that any mail sent to him after October 20, 2008 will not be read or answered. Now you can study with Capella, an online university in the comfort of your own home. If you are particularly interested in literacy and reading, you will find they offer the only state approved master's degree program. My Favorite Law and Order Program
Posted by clare3
Labels: Current Events, Programs
I just love all the Law and Order Programs, but my favorite is the Law and Order Special Victims Unit. Mariska Harkitay is my most favorite actor on the program. She plays the part so very well. She works together with her partner and they always solve the crimes, of course. She is tender hearted and always feels for the kids and young people when they get into trouble. I would really miss this program if they ever take it off the air. The other two Law and Orders are good too but I think this one is the best. Their new programs are on now for the season. I don't mind even watching the re-runs.
Family from Texas
Posted by clare3

Here's our little guy from Texas. Doesn't he look like a Texan in that big hat. He is having a ball with it. He is 11 months old now and the best natured little fellow. He loves outdoors and playing with his toys. His uncle got him a new John Deere toy that is fabulous. He has had an early birthday party already. He will really enjoy it when his real birthday arrives next month. I wonder if he will start walking. He took his time crawling but then none of our kids crawled, they just got up and walked one day. And they were all 13 or 14 months old when they started walking. My husband's mother said all 12 of her kids walked after they were a year old so guess it runs in the family.
Thyroid Problems

Our Little Holly started losing her hair and she broke out in a kind of blisters. The Vet at first thought she had a case of staff infection. We tried a couple of different medicines and salves on her and it cleared up. Then 6 months later it started in again. This time we tried pills and special shampoo and instead of getting better this time, it got worse and everywhere she broke out, she lost her hair. It was spots as big as a quarter and before we knew it her back was looking really bald.
We took her to the Vet again and he took a blood test. It showed that her thyroid was very low so now every morning she gets a half a tiny little pill. The bottle pops when you squeeze it to open it so she knows it is coming and she stands and waits for me to give her the pill. She is so good.
Well, it worked and she quit breaking out and her hair grew back sleek and shiny and better looking than before. We just got a refill of her prescription so we can keep her in good health. I would have never guessed a dog could have a disease that I thought only people had. But the pills sure work and she is our pretty little Holly again. She's in good health now.

Grandchildren

Grandchildren are so much fun and I think they call great grandchildren great because they are great! It is so much fun to watch them at play. Our little great grandson, Emry, lives in Texas and we don't get to see him in person, but his folks put videos on the computer so that we can keep up with him.
Today we got the cutest video of him playing a little piano that he just got. He was having such a ball playing it and laughing and talking and was quite proud of himself. They are such little miracles and it is so much fun watching them grow and mature and do new things almost every day. He will soon be one year old and I don't suppose it will be long until he is walking. His little first cousin will be one year old soon too and I think she is going to walk first. We will watch and see.

Our Little Pet Dog, Holly
Posted by clare3
It would seem that our pets can become almost human in some ways. Since Holly has gotten older, she has begun sort of talking to me. She was four years old before she made much of any sounds but now when she wants to go out, she will sit by one of our chairs and make a little gutteral noise in her throat and we know she is asking us to take her out. Labels: Pets, unselfish love
She loves it when I pour my breakfast food. She will come running from sound asleep in a chair when she hears that cereal hit the dish. She watches while I pour the milk and then we come in here to the computer and eat the cereal while I boot up the computer and get started for the day. For every bite I take, she makes a little sound that says "me too" and I give her a tiny bit, a larger flake or something. She keeps that up until it is gone and then I let her lick the bowl before it goes into the dishwasher.
Also as our pets grow older, they get some of the same ailments we have. She has some arthritis in her back legs and I had to give her a pain pill yesterday because she couldn't jump up into the chair. She also has to have a little pill every day for her thyroid or she breaks out and loses her hair. Isn't that something?
She gets her nails done monthly, has special homeopathic dog food, regular baths with a special shampoo from our Vet, shots, pills for worms and fleas, and gets her teeth checked. Sounds somewhat like we do for ourselves, doesn't it? And the longer you have a pet, the more they need to have done and/or treated but they give us so much love in return. That is worth it all.
Whole Pea Soup
Posted by clare3
My mother-in-law, was the dearest little German lady. She made a homemade whole pea soup that we just love in our family. It is entirely different from split pea soup with ham. And I have been calling around this morning to locate more of the dried whole peas and they seem to be going the way of the dinasaur. Labels: Cooking, whole pea soup
But someone was able to locate a case of them for me and I will be able to pick them up next month at a grocery in the next town. It easy to make.
You soak the bag of whole peas overnight. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of soda to the water. In the meantime, you take about a half pound of finely cut up stew meat and cook it till very tender. I like to pressure cook mine with a little onion salt for extra flavor.
Then the next day you drain off almost all the water off the peas and put them in a 4 quart saucepan. Cover them with water and bring them to a boil until the peas come apart and it forms soup. Add a teaspoon of soda but then turn the heat way down and stir quickly because it will boil right over if you don't.
Once the peas are tender and breaking up, add one large potato, diced small, and you may have to add more water to the pot as you go. Be sure to stir so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. Once the potatoes are done, add the cooked meat with its juice and one 15 oz can of diced carrots, drained. Stir all together and add about a tablespoon of beef bullion. It is salty so do not add any extra salt. Add water to the consistency of the soup you want, and beef bullion to your taste and enjoy. Makes about 4 quarts. If it thickens overnight, gently add a bit more water when heating.
People who won't eat split pea soup have loved this beef whole pea soup.
The Weather is on its Way
Posted by clare3
I was just looking at the latest weather map on our local television station and it looks like a very wide, long stormy area is about to hit us. It is going to cover the entire State. I really don't think we need any rain at all and the farmers sure don't want any.
It is getting colder already and the last thing the farmers need is cold weather and frost in the middle of the harvest. The fields look like a great many acreas of beans have been combined but there is still much corn out there to harvest. So many are hauling it to the ethanol plants now to make ethanol to add to the gasoline. Gas prices have dropped quite a bit around here though.
Anyway, I don't like it when it storms and our little dog, Holly, gets so scared and you just can't comfort her. She paces the floor and pants until it is over. I can feel the cold air moving in already in the house. Will be shutting windows soon.
Tall Grandsons
Posted by clare3
Labels: grandchildren
You don't know me but I am short, very short - 4'8". In my prime, I was a whole 5' 1 3/4" tall but I have really lost the little bit of height I had. I come from a very evenly short family. My dad was about 5'8", my brother is 5'9" but somewhere we got some very tall grandsons. This picture just shows 2 out of 10 of them and they are all taller than I am.
In their father's family are some tall people and they surely inherited it. It was really amazing to watch them grow from little boys to tall men. Now they are in college and the next thing you know they will be out in the working world full-time. That is how fast time flies. They like to make scary videos together and a couple of them are on Facebook and they are down right scary all right.
Seth is the writer and Jesse is a great actor along with their cousins, Tyler, Caleb and Isaac, they have made two videos and put them into contests. The first one won first place and we were so proud of them. It is exciting to see what they will be doing next.
Blogging
Posted by clare3
I have been a typist all my life. I used to envy those who could make afgans, crochet and make crafts. I always used to say the only talent God gave me was typing. Well, I was wrong about that because God also gave me the ability to get along well with people and help them out when they need it, wherever I can. That ability has come back to me many times over in people helping me also. Labels: Blogging
However, typing has definitely been a wonderful talent that God gave me along with some imagination to write posts on my blog. I was sitting thinking about it and how it was planned out many years ago when I was in school, learning how to type, that I would be helping myself to earn a living by typing. It is so enjoyable posting on my blog. It is more fun than work and something I can do in the comfort of my own home.
No more hitting the road in blizzards, thunderstorms, and windy days that would almost blow you off the road. Yes, in the comfort of my own home, no stress, saving a bundle on gas, I am able to blog daily at my own speed, in my own schedule. It's a wonderful life.
Favorite Restaurant
Posted by clare3
We are going out to our favorite restaurant, Carlos O'Kellys tonight for supper. It is more American style Mexican and we just love it. We have tried other restaurants but we always come back to Carlos O'Kellys. Labels: Anniversary Family, Restaurants
Today is our 58th wedding anniversary. It sometimes seems like 100 years ago and then again, it seems like yesterday that we got married. We went off to Bethany, Missouri and got secretly married as I was still in my Senior Year of school but my husband was leaving for the Army in two weeks. My husband spent 2 years in the Army and in Germany right after we got married, so we had our Honeymoon when he got home again.
Then we settled down to having 5 children, setting up a home and raising the kids. We certainly did our part to help populate the earth. My husband worked mainly in co-op elevators, doing everything from grinding feed, mixing feed and delivering feed. We had 3 girls and 2 boys and the last 2 were twin girls so we got a bonus baby that year. It is hard to believe they will be 50 this year.
It is a blessing to live to see your kids meet and marry their mates, set up their own homes, have their own families and those families are starting to have families too. We love the Lord Jesus Christ and have built our home on that foundation and taught our children the same, passing it on down. That is the best gift you can give your children - faith in God.
My Computer
Posted by clare3
My computer has become a very important part of my life. My family helped me get the computer and with their help, I am all set up with a big desk that holds my small flat tower. I can put my printer right on top of it and then the monitor sets beside it, along with the speakers.
I have a telephone at my fingertips and one of the best things is a small television set that plays VCR tapes. Because I am not hooked up to the satellite in here, I tape my favorite programs like CSI and Law and Order and watch them on slow blogging days. I suppose I will have to do something different when everything goes digital in February 2009, but for now, it works perfectly for me.
I love to post about all kinds of subjects and there are so many interesting events going on in the world today. I keep up with the television news and newspapers, as well as, my friends, family and neighbors. It seems there is always plenty to write about if you just look around you.
A while back I got a very comfortable office chair that really makes a difference and since I love to type, blogging is perfect for me. See you on the Internet.
Famous Iowans

It is amazing how many famous people came from Iowa. John Wayne came to mind first along with Johnny Carson. Lillian Russell, who was once said to be the most beautiful woman in the world came from Iowa. A famous President also was from Iowa. Everyone will recognize Herbert Hoover. Probably Johnny Carson will be remembered most by the younger set as he was on the Tonight Show for so long. Everybody loved Johnny. I found a great many more famous people from Iowa and I was surprised to find out who there were.
Children

Children are such a blessing. We have four living children with wonderful mates. They all have Christian homes and we are very proud of them for that. But we are also proud of them because they are doing so well with their careers, much better than we did, and that is how it should be. They are raising their children in the Christian faith and that means a great deal to us.
Now we have grandchildren. What a blessing. There are 10 grandsons and 4 granddaughters. They are all taller than I am, but then I am very short. It was always fun for them to see if they could grow taller than Grammy. Grandpa said "big deal" when one passed me up, :0)
Now we have 5 wonderful great grandchildren, 3 girls and 2 boys and another boy on the way in December. Here is a picture of one who is going to be a year old on Nov. 1. She is just a little doll and will be walking very soon I think. They are so much fun to watch developing.
Sunday Church
Posted by clare3
Sunday is a day we look forward to attending church. We have a wonderful Praise and Worship team in our church. There are keyboards, guitars, flute, bongo drums and great singers. It is a great deal more lively than many churches as we do not sing 4 stanzas of two or three songs, but have many popular gospel chorus type songs that we sing. We raise our hands and praise the Lord. Some dance and wave various color flags. Each flag has a different meaning. We have two huge screens with beautiful pictures on them as backgrounds for the words. Labels: updated church services
During offering time, we always have a very bouncy CD playing with some of the latest in contemporary music by popular contemporary gospel groups. There is nothing dull and boring about it. Pastor always says you have to visit more than once and then you will be hooked and will want to come back over and over because it is exciting.
We have several other ministries going on too. One of the main ones is Traction Action, where we bus in anywhere from 100-200 kids ages 5-12 every Wednesday night for a Bible lesson, puppets, games and treats. We will be having a big party for the kids with Bible costumes and treats at Halloween.
Also during the week, Generation Extreme Youth Group meet in the main sanctuary and also the adults meet separately in the Hospitality Room for a weekly lesson. The adults have coffee and it is a laid back time of fellowship too.
We will be Greeters at one of the two entrances on Sunday and it is fun for us to be where the kids come in and head for Power Hour and the Nursery and other classes.
SNOW!
Posted by clare3
There is 6 1/2" of new snow out west. We have been hearing that it is going to be a "numbing" winter this year. Our temperatures in the morning are near freezing. We have some frost on the ground this morning for the first time and it is only October 4. You can almost tell by our temperatures that there is cold and snow out west.
I remember about 10-15 years ago, we had two grandsons staying with us over the weekend. It was October 31 and Halloween. We got up in the morning and all the bushes just outside out window by the deck, were covered with a light coating of snow. We took a picture and dated it and put it in the photo album.
I believe that was the same year that those same grandsons were staying with us in July. One of them yelled, "grammy, it's snowing" and they were right. There was a light snow flurry coming down. That was really rare in a month noted for 80-90 degree temperatures. That was a very cold and snowy winter and we did a great deal of shoveling and snow blowing that year. We cleared the snow for 3 neighbors besides our own and it was a long winter. I sure hope they are wrong in their predictions.
Pollock Fish Fry
Posted by clare3
We love pollock fish and I make it at home. My husband says it is better than the fish fries we go to. I like to beat an egg or two depending on how much fish you are going to cook. I use a wire whip to beat the eggs. Then roll a bunch of crackers in a ziplock bag until they are fine crumbs. Labels: hash browns, pollock fish fry, tartar sauce
I have a rolling pin that is the greatest. It is probably over 50 years old and I got it with green stamps when our daughter was 3. It is made of some sort of metal and is good looking and will be passed down through many generations, I am sure.
But back to the fish. I like to cut the fillets in 2 inch chunks and lay them out on a plate. Then get out a deep skillet and pour a good low fat no cholesterol cooking oil in it and heat it to hot. Dip the fish into the beaten egg in one dish and then into another shallow dish full of cracker crumbs so that it is coated on both sides. Carefully add the fish pieces to the hot oil and salt them. It doesn't take long to cook, just be sure they are golden brown. Turn them over once until they are golden brown on the other side. Then put them on another clean plate until you have all the fish done.
A quick and easy tartar sauce is Miracle Whip with sweet pickle relish stirred into it to your taste. Add a big serving of hash browns and a salad and you have a great quick delicious supper. It has become one of our favorite meals when I am busy blogging.
Prostate Cancer
Posted by clare3
Prostate Cancer can strike younger men, as well as, older men. They are recommending PSA blood tests for younger and younger men these days. Those found with it in their 50's are usually recommended to have surgery to remove it. But that isn't a cure all because they have also found that a few of the cancer cells get away into the blood stream and the cancer shows up again later. Once you are having PSA tests, they keep you on a regular schedule. There are many kinds of treatment these days. They not only do surgery, but they have a series of radiation treatments, shots, and chemotherapy too now and some we haven't been told about yet, I guess. I hope every man over 50 knows what his PSA is and keeps track of it. Prostate cancer has been found in almost every man over 80 but that is not what the died of. Labels: prostate cancer
